Nevertheless: Letters to Sarah for Thriving in Life
What if chronic illness changes your life without taking away your ability to truly live it?
Nevertheless: Letters to Sarah for Thriving in Life began with a simple request.
When the daughter of one of Beth’s closest friends developed chronic illnesses, her mother asked Beth to mentor her in learning how to live well with them. Because distance, health, and schedules made ordinary mentoring difficult, Beth began writing letters to Sarah instead.
One letter became another.
And before long, Beth realized that the things she and Sarah were learning together might encourage others walking the same road.
Nevertheless: Letters to Sarah speaks honestly about the realities of chronic illness: changing abilities, unpredictable days, difficult symptoms, fear, loss, identity, expectations, relationships, and the struggle to keep moving forward when life no longer looks the way you expected.
Beth understands that experience personally.
But these are not letters about simply enduring illness.
They are about thriving in the life you still have.

Throughout the letters, Beth encourages Sarah to choose hope, pursue peace, hold on to purpose, remember that she is more than her diagnosis, and learn to live meaningfully even when illness has affected nearly every part of life.
You can begin right here.

About Dr. Beth Madison

Dr. Beth Madison is a soil scientist, professor, author, and woman who knows suffering personally.
For nearly forty years, Beth has studied the ground beneath our feet. Along the way, she has also learned what happens when the ground beneath your life shifts.
Her experiences with chronic illness, cancer, and loss have shaped the way she writes and teaches about suffering, faith, hope, and what it means to keep living when circumstances cannot simply be fixed.
Beth does not write from the perspective of someone who has solved suffering.
She writes as someone still walking through it.
Her work brings together Scripture, personal experience, the perspective of a scientist, and the steady conviction that difficult circumstances do not have to have the last word.
